Climate Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Those who did least to cause the climate emergency are also those who are most affected and least heard. We commit to actively changing this.

Guiding Principles

We recognise that without conscious efforts to push for all aspects of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ), many discussions on sustainability can end up being based on predominantly Western perspectives and/or focusing only on the stories of those already privileged with access to opportunities to have their voices represented.

We commit to implementing concrete measures to promote Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice throughout our work, to engage with, learn from, and amplify the voices of underrepresented communities - by which we mean those groups that are currently not well represented in wider tourism dialogues and/or in the Tourism Declares’ network. These include: communities of colour; diaspora, local, and/or indigenous communities; and socially and economically marginalised communities.

Our Values

Everyone is welcome

  • We all have a role to play as individuals in making the changes necessary to avert the worst of the climate crisis.

  • It doesn’t matter who you are, what sort of company or organisation you work for, how senior you are. Your voice is welcome.

  • It doesn’t matter how much time or energy you have. If you wish to give some of it to supporting our mission, we will find a way to make that happen.

We can only succeed if our community represents everyone

  • Tourism spans the whole world, and we need the broadest diversity of voices and experiences to help design the future of our industry

  • Those who did least to cause the problems are those who are both least heard and most affected. We commit to actively addressing this.

  • Our focus is on changing the systems that cause the damage and make individual behaviour change more difficult.

Our Commitments

We will build a diverse team by the end of 2021

  • We will increase diversity across all levels of volunteer and management.
  • We are seeking advice and guidance from the current Community members, to better understand what barriers currently exist, and how we can make it easier and more accessible for tourism professionals with various backgrounds to actively engage with and contribute to Tourism Declares.
  • Throughout 2021 we will focus on recruitment and outreach efforts that seek to engage underrepresented communities, to foster social inclusion and engage the participation of front line communities that experience the worst climate impacts.

We will frame our outreach to match our principles

  • We commit to working with relevant Tourism Declares Community members (e.g. the Climate Justice group members) to set specific DEIJ targets, and to monitor and report on progress on a regular basis.
  • As a first step, we are seeking advice and guidance from the current Community members, to better understand what barriers currently exist, and how we can make it easier and more accessible for tourism professionals with various backgrounds to actively engage with and contribute to Tourism Declares.

We will listen to, learn from, and amplify diverse voices

  • We will avoid settling for “whenever possible” or having token diversity presenters. There is no lack of diverse talent in our industry. It is our responsibility to do our own homework to make sure that the content we create is representative of the realities of our global industry.
  • As we will present regular webinars and publish case studies and articles throughout the year, our overall DEIJ goals are to achieve equal gender balance overall, and to ensure that more than 2/3 of all voices in 2021 represent backgrounds of diverse communities (i.e. the “underrepresented communities” as defined above).

Video Content: Webinars, interviews etc

  • All webinar sessions and other types of video content produced and shared by Tourism Declares should be evaluated through the prism of DEIJ. If any planned panel / dialogue / discussion fails to be aligned with the TDCE value with regards to DEIJ, the plan itself must be re-evaluated.
  • We will not host any all-male panel (3+ speakers including moderators).
  • Any panel or speaker group of more than 3 people will always include at least one speaker representing one or more groups that belong to underrepresented communities.

Written content: Case studies, articles, interviews, etc

  • We will ensure a mix of perspectives, and ensure we give voice to those less heard or marginalised.
  • We will avoid 'poverty porn' or any form of objectification in any imagery we use.
  • We will actively seek to recruit and support writers and content creators of color to be part of the team.

Help us get better

We welcome all input from our members, regardless of race, religion, colour, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age or physical ability, at any time to ensure that our commitments constantly evolve and improve.

  • What have we got wrong?

  • What are we missing?

  • Who have we forgotten?

  • How can we listen better?

  • What more can we do to support?

  • What else do we need to be asking?
